The Capitol Heights

Monthly Playlist – January 2015

Posted 01-29-2015

What’s on The Capitol Heights’ playlist? January 2015 Edition

There’s no special theme this month. Just sweet-ass tunes. But not sweet ass-tunes. Cause that’s gross and quite different.

  1. Elbow – Grounds for divorce
If you listen to this and don’t hum the chorus and guitar licks for the rest of the day – go to a doctor. You probably have super powers and are resistant to audio-torture.
  2. Counting Crows – Long december
If you want a melancholy vocal line with a soft piano accompaniment. Turn around now. This is – LULZ J/K. This is a great one from Counting Crows and it has just that: sweet vocals and honey piano. Man I want some waffles right now.
  3. The Decemberists – Make you better
Make you better is a newer Decemberists song. It has catchy tunes and lyrics.
  4. Sufjan Stevens – The predatory wasp of the palisades is out to get us
This is one of our favorites of the sterling album Come On! Feel The Illinoise! It tells a great story and builds beautifully over the course of the song. We recommend this one – but you should really listen to the whole CD. You won’t regret it.
  5. The Verve Pipe – The Freshman
We were actually looking for another song by the verve, but this one showed up… So we said “what the hay” and threw it on. #ThrowbackThursdayOnFriday?
  6. Against Me! – Thrash Unreal
Songs that tell stories can be a special treat and this song fulfills. It talks about an aging, larger-junkie-female hitting the bars at night to unsuccessfully find a dude. I’m not kidding. And I love every second of this song. A lot of their other music is worth your time.
  7. Bus Driver – Colonize The Moon
The best thing about Bus Driver is his delivery. You can hear his mouth distorting in SO many different ways with every syllable. And his vocabulary is insane and will make you do at least one dictionary search in every single song. I love that, in this song, he’s asking for donations. Not to fix world hunger or help poor children, but so he can colonize the moon. And I want to help him get there. (Kickstarter anyone?)
  8. alt-J – Tessellate
The chill beat in this song is very relaxing although I do think that at times they are just banging the hell out of a piece of metal in the background. The name of the song is a verb having to do with decorating a floor with mosaics. I don’t really get what that has to do with the song…and to be honest, they lyrics don’t seem that cohesive. But the song is definitely worth a listen.
  9. tUnE-yArDs – Powa
To say that this song is ‘unique’ is not doing it justice. The singer uses head and chest voice, alongside falsetto, and the song has like 9 different feel changes in it. And it works in a funkyily addictive manner.
  10. The Kooks – Bad Habit
The Kooks are definitely a band which which we’re developing a love interest. Jack White is playing guitar on this song and if that’s not enough every single member of the band sounds like they are having a blast.
This song’s chorus can sing us out:
    oooo OOO OOAA
    oooo OOO OOAA
    oooo OOO OOAA

Local track:

B Side Shuffle – Castle in the Sky
These guys like everything we do on Instagram, and we thought we’d show ’em a little love. Besides (GET IT?!), their music is dayum good, phunky, and phun.
